Configuring Agent 1.X

 

  1. Obtain Agent by visiting Forté Inc.  
    You will need to obtain a registration code and register your copy of Agent.
  2. Install into the directory of your choice
    ( i.e. C:/program files/agent/ ).
  3. Create a directory for the decoded attachments to go to.
    ( C:/Download/ ).
  4. Create a directory for the temporary attachments to go to.
    ( C:/Download/Temp ).
  5. Start Agent 1.5.
  6. Select from the Options menu User and System Profile.
  7. Configure your User Information profiles.
    1. Select the User tab.
    2. Complete all fields with the appropriate information.
    3. Check Server Requires Authorization Login.
    4. Enter your username.
    5. Check Remember Password Between Sessions.
    6. Enter your password.
  8. Configure your NNTP News server address and SMTP E-Mail Host.
    1. Select the System tab.
    2. In the space for News server enter server address eg: news.news4u2.com
    3. In the space for Mail server enter the name of your services mail server. ( For example: mail.yourisp.com)
      This is needed only for e-mailing replies directly to the sender of a posting.
    4. Click OK.
  9. Refresh your groups list.
    1. From the Online menu select Refresh Groups List.
    2. Select Delete All Extinct Groups.
    3. Click OK.
      This process may take some time depending upon the speed of your connection.
    4. Subscribe to frequently viewed groups.
    5. Select desired group.
    6. From the Group menu select Subscribe.
      The subscribe group will show a newspaper icon if subscribed to.
    7. Repeat this procedure for all desired groups.
    8. To show only the subscribed groups:
      1. From the Group menu select Show then select Subscribed Groups.
  10. Get messages in a group
    1. From the Online menu select Get New Headers in Selected Groups
       

Tip: You can install Agent as many times as you wish just create a new folder to install Agent into. i.e.

C:/program files/agent/prime 

C:/program files/agent/xrs

C:/program files/agent/dacs

  1. Obtain a copy of Microsoft Internet Explorer - by visiting Microsoft Corporation.
  2. Install into the directory of your choice
    (i.e. C:/program files/MSIE/ ).
  3. Start Internet Explorer
  4. Select from the Go menu Read News.
  5. Configure your User Profiles
    1. Select from the News menu Options.
    2. Select the Server tab.
    3. Complete all fields with the appropriate information.
  6. Configure your NNTP news server address and SMTP E-Mail Host.
    1. Select the Server tab.
    2. In the News Server(s) group, click add.
      This will bring up the News Server Properties window.
    3. Select the General tab.
    4. In the News Server Name enter server address eg: news.news4u2.com
    5. Check the box next to This server requires me to logon.
      The Logon settings group should become available.
    6. Click the radio button next to Logon using
    7. Enter in your username into the the Account Name: field.
    8. Enter in your password into the Password: field.
  7. Click OK
  8. Get newsgroups
    1. Select from the News menu Newsgroups.
    2. Click the Reset List Button along the right hand side.
  9. Subscribe to frequently viewed groups.
    1. Select desired group.
    2. Click the Subscribe button.
    3. Repeat this procedure for all desired groups.
    4. To Show only the subscribed groups:
      1. Click on the Subscribed tab below the newsgroups list.
    5. Click OK
  10. In the Newsgroups field, select one of your subscribed newsgroups.
    This will begin to download the headers.
  11. Click on an article header to view the article.

Configuring Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.x/5.x: Outlook Express

Obtain a copy of MSIE 4.0 - by visiting Microsoft Corporation.

Download a copy and Install it into the directory of your choice
(i.e. C:/program files/MSIE/ ).

Start Outlook Express

Select from the Go menu News.

Configure your User profile

  1. If you are adding news4u2 servers in addition to other news servers:
    1. From the Tools menu, select Accounts...
    2. Click the Add button and select News... from the drop down menu
  2. Follow the instructions provided by the Internet Connection Wizard.
    In the window in which you have to enter the news server address eg: news.news4u2.com check the button "My news server requires me to log on".
  3. Click Next (the Internet news server Logon window appears).
  4. Enter your Account Name and Password.
  5. Click Next
  6. Select the appropriate connection to the Internet.
  7. Click Next
  8. Click Finish

To see a list of available Newsgroups now - Window Pops Up.

  1. Click Yes if you want to do it now. Then follow the instructions in number 8.
  2. Click No if you want to do it later. To get the list next time follow the steps bellow.

Get newsgroups

  1. Select from the Tools menu the Newsgroups, or on the tools bar click on the News Groups icon. The list of News Groups available on xrs.news4u2.com server will be downloaded automatically. The first time it could take few minutes.
  2. To update the list of News Groups available click the Reset List Button on the right hand side.

Subscribe to frequently viewed groups.

  1. Select desired group.
  2. Click the Subscribe button.
  3. Repeat this procedure for all desired groups.
  4. To Show only the subscribed groups:
  5. Click on the Subscribed tab below the newsgroups list.
  6. Click OK

To start reading articles

  1. Start Outlook Express.
  2. Select from the Go menu News . The list of the News Groups that you have subscribed will appear.
  3. Select one of the news groups to which you have subscribed to and double click, or click on the News Groups icon to see a list of available News Groups. This will begin to download the headers.
  4. Click on an article header to view the article.

Configuring Netscape 3.x

  1. Obtain Netscape Navigator - by visiting Netscape Communications Corporation.
  2. Install the program into the default directories.
  3. Start Netscape Navigator.
  4. Select from the Window menu Netscape News
  5. Select from the Options menu Mail and News Preferences
  6. Configure your NNTP News server address.
    1. Select the Server tab.
    2. Enter in the News (NNTP) Server address eg: news.news4u2.com.
  7. Configure your User Information profile.
    1. Select the Identity tab.
    2. Complete all field with the appropriate information
    3. Click OK.
  8. Configure your Number of connections to 1.
    1. Select from the Options menu Network Preferences.
    2. Select the Connections tab.
    3. Enter 1 as the number of connections.
    4. Click OK.
  9. Show newsgroups
    1. Select from the news server window eg: news.news4u2.com
    2. Double Click to open the folder
    3. Enter your username and password when prompted.
    4. Select from the Options menu Show All Newsgroups
      Make sure you let Netscape finish downloading the groups list, otherwise it will truncate the list and you will need to delete the news host and begin again.
  10. Click on a newsgroup to access & read Usenet.


    You will need to click twice on an article before Netscape responds to your retrieve article command. The first click will usually give you an error message. The second click should show the article.

Configuring Netscape Communicator 4.x

  1. Obtain a copy of Netscape Communicator 4.x - by visiting Netscape Communications Corporation
    (Navigator 4.x (Stand Alone) does not include a news reader).
  2. Install the program into the default directories.
  3. Start Netscape Communicator.
  4. Select from the Communicator menu Collabra Discussion Group (a new window appears).
  5. Configure the News Server
    1. Select from the Edit Menu Preferences.
    2. In the Category window on the left-hand side select under Mail & Group Groups Server.
    3. Under Discussion groups (news) server: enter the News (NNTP) Server eg: news.news4u2.com.
    4. Click OK
  6. Adding a new news server or as an option to the steps above
    1. Select from the File menu New Discussion Group Server.
    2. Enter a news server eg: news.news4u2.com.
    3. Click OK.
  7. Viewing and Subscribing to the Available Newsgroups
    1. Select the news server that you want to access in the Collabra window by clicking on it.
    2. Select from the File menu Subscribe to Discussion Groups (a new window appears).
    3. Enter your username.
    4. Click OK.
    5. Enter your password.
    6. Click OK.
    7. The list of newsgroups will download automatically - may take a few moments.
    8. Select the newsgroups that you want to subscribe to.
    9. Click on the Subscribe button on the right hand side of the window.
    10. Click OK when done.
  8. Viewing and Reading the Articles in the Newsgroups
    1. In the Collabra window double-click on the news server xrs.news4u2.com (the list of newsgroups to which you are subscribed will appear).
    2. Double Click on the newsgroup that you want to access
    3. Start Reading.

Configuring News Rover 5.X

  1. Obtain a News Rover Demo by visiting S&H Computer Systems  
    You will need to obtain a registration code and register your copy of News Rover for unrestricted use.
  2. Install into the directory of your choice
    ( i.e. C:/program files/agent/ ).
  3. Start News Rover.
  4. Select the Configure menu. This will bring up the News Rover Configuration window.
  5. Configure the news server:
    1. In the News Rover Configuration window, select the Server tab.
    2. Click the Add Server button.
    3. Enter in the pop-up window:
      eg: news.news4u2.com.
    4. Check the Logon authorization required for this server box.
    5. Enter in the Account name: field your username.
    6. Enter in the Password: field your password.
    7. In the Type of Internet Connection group, select I will manually initiate dialing to connect to the Internet.
  6. Configure your User Information profiles.
    1. Select the E-Mail tab.
    2. Enter in the Your name: field your name.
    3. Enter in the E-mail Address: field your E-Mail Address.
    4. Enter in the Reply-to Address: field your E-Mail Address.
    5. Enter in the Outgoing SMTP server: field your SMTP mail server
      (i.e. user@yourdomain.com.
  7. Get newsgroups list
    1. Select the Get-newsgroups menu to begin the groups list download process.
  8. Add frequently viewed newsgroups
    1. Select the Interests menu to bring you the Internet Groups window.
    2. Click on the New Interest Group button to begin the new group addition process.
  9. Get groups list:
    1. In the mail News Rover window, click on the Run button to begin retrieving articles from the server.
  10. View Messages
    1. From the View menu, select Messages.
    2. Double click on the newsgroups you wish to view.
    3. Select the article that you wish to read.
  11. Refresh your groups list.
    1. From the Online menu select Refresh Groups List.
    2. Select Delete All Extinct Groups.
    3. Click OK.
      This process may take some time depending upon the speed of your connection.
  12. Subscribe to frequently viewed groups.
    1. Select desired group.

Configuring WinVN 0.99.9

Obtain a copy of WinVN - by visiting WinVN.
It is under WinVN User's Guide content.

  1. Install into the directory of your choice ( i.e. C:/program files/winvn/ ).
  2. Start WinVN.
  3. Configure your User Information profiles.
    1. Select from Config menu Communications.
    2. Click in the space for Authorization Information.
    3. Enter in your Username and Password in the spaces provided.
    4. Check Save Password.
    5. Click OK.
  4. Configure your NNTP News Server address and SMTP Email Host.
    1. Select from Config menu Communications.
    2. In the spaces provided for NNTP Server, enter for eg: news.news4u2.com
    3. In the space for SMTP Server, enter the name of your service mail server.
      (for example: mail.yourisp.com)
      This is needed only for the emailing replies directly to sender of a posting.
    4. Click OK.
  5. Subscribe to frequently viewed groups.
    1. Select desired group(s).
    2. Select from Group menu Subscribe Selected Groups.
    3. Repeat this procedure for all desired groups.

Reloading the Articles

To synchronize your article numbers with our systems, follow these steps:

  1. Update your groups list to match our servers.
    1. From Config menu select Group List.
    2. In Retrieve Group List, check...
      "Yes" for computer to automatically refresh the group list.
    3. Click OK.
      This will begin downloading the groups on our servers. This process may take some time depending upon the speed of your connection.

Configuring YA Newswatcher 2.4.0

  1. Obtain a copy of YA Newswatcher v2.4.0 from a Info-mac mirror or Umich mirror.
    Info-mac and Umich are Mac software archives.
  2. Install into the directory of your choice
    (i.e C:/program files/YA/0.
  3. Start YA Newswatcher v2.4.0.
  4. Configure your NNTP News server address and SMTP E-Mail Host.
    1. From Edit menu select Preferences.
    2. Select Servers Addresses from the pull-down menu.
    3. In the space for News Server enter fo eg:
      news.news4u2.com
    4. In the space for Mail Server enter the name of your mail service mail server.
      (hint: ISP.com)
    5. Click OK.
    6. Exit YA Newswatcher and reload again.
      This will prevent your system from causing any damage or corruption.
  5. Configure your User Information profile.
    1. From Edit menu select Preferences.
    2. Select Authentication from the pull-down menu.
    3. Enter your Username.
    4. Enter your Password.
    5. Check Always Authenticate.
      This will save your Username and Password for future login.
    6. Click OK.
  6. Subsribe to frequently viewed groups.
    1. Select your desired groups from the list.
    2. You can...
      1. Do a drag-copy to the Titled Group window, or
      2. From Special menu select Subscribe.

Reloading the Articles

  1. Update your groups list to match our servers.
From Special menu select Rebuild Group List.
This will begin the synchronizing process. This process may take time depending upon the speed of your connection.
